The history of the Hellertown Area Library is a story of community effort. In the autumn of 1989, a small group of citizens began a good books collection. A few months and 3,000 books later the Hellertown Area Library Association was born. Residents from Hellertown and surrounding areas rolled up their sleeves to make this dream of a community library real. Citizens and civic groups donated money toward a rental site. Volunteers built book shelves, accessed books and gathered supplies. On August 11, 1990, the temporary home of the library was opened at 528 Main Street in Hellertown.
The next step was to establish a permanent home for the library. The PA Department of Education granted $50,000 toward a new building. The Borough of Hellertown offered to lease the library a site located at 409 Constitution Avenue. On August 4, 1992, over 250 citizens joined together to break ground at the site. The new library opened the Summer of 1993.
In October 2015, the library began a renovation of its space to better suit patrons by consolidating Children's and YA books on the top floor, making more space for computer usage, as well as expanding and reorganizing the basement level for events.

"The Hellertown Borough Council announced a significant decision to secure the future of the Hellertown Area Library by approving a 10-year partnership and funding agreement that was approved on Monday October 21st and executed this morning at the Library. This long-term commitment ensures stable financial support for the library, solidifying its role as an essential educational and cultural resource for the residents of Hellertown.
The agreement reflects the Borough Council’s dedication to supporting the library while allowing it to remain an independent entity that serves the community’s needs. With this commitment, the Hellertown Area Library can continue to provide a wide range of programs, maintain its facilities, and offer resources that cater to the local population."
Thanks to the Saucon Valley Women's club who sponsored the cake and brought out the artifacts to help celebrate this milestone!
Special thanks to Janie Hecker and Jane Styer who were there in person sharing their stories and helping patrons and staff reminisce.
