Ring in the New!
2013 promises to be a year of new technologies and innovations at the library. Watch for library staff to have access to an Apple iPad to assist both patrons and Saucon Valley Middle School seventh graders with their devices. Additionally two new wireless access points will be installed in the library's lower level to provide better wireless service.
Beginning in January, two new powerful databases will be added to the library's collection with access in the library or from home via the library's web site. Cypress Resume makes it easy to complete your resume in minutes! Choose from 20,000 statements that are tailored to showcase your talents. Quickly create cover letters and reference pages and then download, edit, publish and save. Your resume is easy to update, too! Learning Express Library features online learning platforms covering a wide range of career-oriented licensing and certification exams in health care, civil service, education and much more. The database also has interactive tutorials to help users improve basic skills in reading, writing and math. Learning Express Library features help to prepare for high-stakes tests such as the GED, ACT and SAT. Other features include: online practice tests that are true previews of the official; self-paced courses that help learners prepare to take certification exams, placement tests, and academic assessments; essays that are instantly scored and can pinpoint the strengths and weakness of a student's written work; instant scoring and individual analysis to help patrons improve their test scores and finally, explanations of both right and wrong answers to promote understanding and retention. Both databases are absolutely FREE for you regardless of where you live as long as you have a Hellertown Area Library card. The library staff is happy to assist you in all your school assignments, job related searches, resume and cover letter building and computer lessons - just ask us!

Dig into Reading!
It is never too early for us to start thinking about the Summer Reading Program. This year we will be going underground with the theme "Dig into Reading!" To help us begin our journey underground, we are asking kids to use their imagination and creativity to make posters. Please show us your own interpretation to the them "Dig into Reading." The posters will be displayed in the community. If you need a poster board, please pick it up at the library. All posters must include the theme "Dig into Reading" and the words "Hellertown Area Library." Posters must be turned in by April 1st.

Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig (a staff recommendation)
Miriam Black can see exactly how and when a person will die, with disturbing detail, whenever she makes skin to skin contact. She has fought for years to save lives, but has resolved herself to the fact that fate wants what it wants and there is nothing she can do to stop it. She has been witness to many deaths of strangers she happened to touch, living off of the deceased's wallets. However, when a truck driver named Louis enters Miriam's life, she sees that within the last seconds of his life, he calls out her name. This is the first time fate has decided to include Miriam so intimately in someone's demise. Now Miriam will try anything to change that fate.
Right now you may be thinking to yourself this sounds incredibly morbid, and you would be right. On the surface it is a thriller about psychopaths, drug deals, death, and crime. It has booze, sex, and cigarettes. The characters are intriguing, strange, and conniving. It plays into our fear, anger, and utilizes a dark sense of humor. Under the surface, it is a story about fate and consequences.
